Today the Supreme Court made a great ruling for free speech. It upheld the notion that free speech is better than restricted speech, even if the message of the speech is disagreeable to many. The comment of father that brought the suit—that his son was not gay and these protesters shouldn't have been at his funeral—sums up exactly why this ruling is important: it suggests that these protests would be ok if the dead solder was gay. The more pain that straight Americans suffer from the homophobia that groups like WBC cause, the sooner mainstream America will have to confront the pain and misery that religious motivated intolerance causes.

Despite the fact that conservatives are always accusing liberals of trying to control what people can say and think – this and other suits against so-called anti-hate speech laws are championed by liberal groups such as the ACLU. It is noteworthy that the lone dissenter on this ruling was conservative Bush appointee Samuel Alito. In another landmark anti hate speech ruling, involving legislation against cross-burning-which the ACLU also championed-the lone dissenter was conservative Clarence Thomas. Conservatives are supporters of Big Butt rights: they support rights like free-speech, BUT...

I was very upset over the ruling that was passed down. I could not understand how that kind of speech can be protected. But as the adage says "I don't agree with what you say but defend to the death your right to say it" (paraphrase) The church would have done better if they were against war.
