Continental Airlines has joined US Airways, American, and Delta airlines, and announced hefty increases in luggage fees for previously exempt trans-atlantic travelers. Up until recently, most airlines begrudgingly allowed two checked bags for long-haul international travelers. But that's ending.
From now on, many passengers flying on discounted tickets on Continental will have to pay a hefty $50 for a second checked bag. For the time being, the first checked bag will still fly without an additional fee as long as it meets the airline's standard size and weight restrictions. Passengers are still allowed the personal carryon item and carryon bag, but overall, it's a great incentive to pack light.
Not everyone hates these new restrictions. Arthur Frommer, in his new book "Ask Arthur Frommer", praised a decision by United Airlines to charge fees for second shecked bags on domestic flights as "the best thing that's happened to travelers in years". Um hm. I love Arthur's advice, usually, but he's never struck me as much of a fashionista.
But, fortunately, there is still one type of place where you can pack extremely light and still be in perfect fashion wherever you go, no matter what the bag fees are. Nude Resorts and Beaches
